The register

A book on every summit.

On most summits there is a book in a metal box. You write your name, the date, a line about the weather or your knees, and read who was up before you.

Summitry is that book. One register per peak, pass and hut, kept for everyone who signs it. No pencil, no wet pages, no box that someone carried down.

Up in the dark, down in soup. Worth it for the ten minutes in between.

Bergschrund open, go early. Sixth time up here and I still go quiet at the top.

Grandpa signed the paper book here in 1971. Hi, Grandpa.

A signature says where you stood.

Every entry carries a tier, shown wherever it appears. The book tells the difference between a summit you signed and one you remember.

Verified

You were on the summit. The phone checks its position within 50 m and writes the time. Public by default, in the register for everyone.

Tracked

A GPS track from Strava or a GPX file, matched to the summits it crossed. Your whole history, reviewed once. Private until you say otherwise.

Claimed

Your word. A summit from before the app, or a day the phone stayed in the pack. Counts in your own book, nowhere else.

No signal on top? The signature waits in the phone and lands in the register when you are back down.

Logbook

Every peak, pass and hut. By year.

A list, a map, or a page per year. Notes, photos and the people you were with, kept in the order you climbed them.

Map

A map that fills up.

Maps drawn like paper. Signed summits in ochre, tracked ones in glacier, the rest still to come.

Statistics

The book, counted.

Summits per year, metres climbed, the highest, the one you keep going back to. Lists fill in as you sign, and a list you are chasing shows on the map as the summits still to come.
